RMIT University - Women's Football Academy

Ausco and RMIT deliver new unisex AFL changerooms

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University is leading the way for female sport participation with the creation of their Women’s Football Academy. The program aims to promote and develop players, coaches and administrators in women’s football.

The dramatic surge in grassroots football participation, especially in female leagues has highlighted the lack of suitable amenities for players and officials and the need to provide affordable facility solutions to support diversity and further growth across the sport.

Following a new oval at the RMIT Bundoora West campus in early 2018, Ausco Modular installed new unisex player changerooms and supporting amenities. The facilities will enable the return of the University’s largest sporting clubs to the Bundoora Sports Precinct and will facilitate the establishment of some new major women’s sporting tenants and women’s football in the community.

Ausco delivered the $533,000 project at RMIT which includes two unisex compliant changerooms with cubicle showers for player privacy, two medical rooms, an AFL-standard umpires’ facility, public amenities, storage area and the university’s first gender neutral toilet in a sporting facility. Also included is 30 digital lockers in each changeroom to assist the protection and storage of players and coaches’ personal belongings.

Following an independent assessment conducted on modular building methodology versus traditional site-built construction, the modular building process was proven to deliver club facilities efficiently up to 60% faster and at 15-30% less cost.

The project was completely managed by Ausco Modular in conjunction with university key contacts. The step-by-step process guaranteed project completion by March 2019, under six months from contract signing to handover to the university.

The new Women’s Football Academy, with the continued support of the Essendon Football Club, will create education and development pathways for students and elite athletes and encourage greater participation in women’s football.
