Major Road Projects Victoria, Whelans Group & Ausco Modular

Streamlining Site Operations for Construction in Victoria

Whelans Group chose Ausco Modular to establish their site compound for the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade, a project they’re delivering on behalf of Major Road Projects Victoria.

The Challenge: Efficient Site Setup for a Major Infrastructure Project

For construction companies in Victoria, big infrastructure projects often mean juggling tight timelines, intricate site logistics, and the need to create comfortable, and compliant on-site facilities for the team. This is what Whelans Group, a leading regional Victorian civil construction company, set out to do when they chose Ausco Modular to establish their site compound for the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade, a project they’re delivering on behalf of Major Road Projects Victoria.

The head project aims to:

  • replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
  • build new through and turning lanes
  • build new shared walking and cycling paths
  • upgrade surrounding bus stops

The project team’s goal was to establish a modern, seamless, and comfortable work environment for their crew of up to 30 to be based at the site office, allowing them to focus entirely on their core construction activities. They sought a partner who could deliver a comprehensive, turnkey site solution - avoiding the hassle of tying up their own staff in site setup and streamlining their invoicing process. Whelans Group Project Manager, George Dalton, already knew Ausco from a previous role and wanted to bring
those learnings and improvements to this project. It was a relationship built on mutual understanding – and it worked.

This project wasn’t just about dropping buildings on site. It needed careful planning, a smart layout, and a team that could stay engaged and proactive to meet the Project Manager’s high standards.

Ausco's turnkey solution: Precision, comfort, and efficiency

Ausco Modular stepped in to deliver a complete turnkey site setup so the Whelans and MRPV teams could just move in and get on with the project. Ausco’s solution included:

  • 6 Eco Upgrade Office Modules: Providing modern, energy-efficient spaces for administration and planning
  • 3 Lunchroom Modules: Ensuring clean, comfortable break areas
  • 1 Parent/Prayer Room Module: supporting inclusivity and diverse needs
  • Site Supervisor Office
  • 5 Changeroom and Toilet Modules: Delivering essential showers and change areas for staff comfort

From the first conversation in February 2025 to the handover in late June, Ausco worked closely with Whelans to get every detail right. Ausco's Sales and PM/Construction teams, along with Operations and Yard Management all played a role – proving that when internal teams align, the client benefits.

By taking on the entire site set-up and bundling it into a single invoice, Ausco freed up Whelans’ skilled people to focus on what they do best: delivering critical infrastructure.

The Outcome: Streamlined Operations and Continued Partnership

The collaboration between Whelans and Ausco Modular proved highly effective in establishing a functional, comfortable, and efficient site for the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade project.

The site came together exactly as planned – functional, comfortable, and efficient - with Ausco on site throughout build-up and beyond to keep the project moving without delays.

This project highlights several key wins when it comes to site setup solutions for Victorian construction companies:

  • Operational efficiency: The turnkey approach significantly reduced administrative burdens and allowed teams to remain focused on high-value construction tasks, directly contributing to project productivity.
  • Customised solutions: Ausco's willingness to engage proactively and refine layouts over an extended period ensured the modular facilities perfectly matched the client's specific operational and aesthetic requirements.
  • Reliable partnership: The project reinforced Ausco's reputation as a solution-oriented and responsive partner, capable of supporting complex civil infrastructure projects with high-quality, fit-for-purpose modular buildings.
  • Comprehensive welfare: Providing a full suite of modern welfare facilities, from offices and lunchrooms to changerooms and a parent/prayer room, ensured a comfortable and compliant environment for all on-site personnel.

This project is a great example of how partnering with Ausco Modular can make site setup stress-free, support your team’s welfare, and keep major infrastructure projects on track.
